Howard has particular experience in cases involving food hygiene in slaughter houses, meat cutting plants and other food businesses, and the complex European Union regulations governing such matters.  The cases frequently involve technical scientific issues.

He is regularly instructed by the Food Standards Agency and various local authorities in such cases.

He is also regularly instructed in cases brought by DEFRA involving farming matters and animal welfare in slaughterhouses.

Recent and notable cases:-

  • R v Yusuf (2015) – Prosecution of a man for Breaching a Food Prohibition Order and food hygiene offences arising out of the operation of an illicit meat business, involving the use of multiple false identities;
  • R v Wainwright (2014) – Prosecution of a man for operating an unapproved sausage production facility in a dirty farm barn involving numerous serious hygiene offences;
  • R v Holmes (2013)  – Prosecution under the Cattle Identification Regulations of a man in connection with the illicit disposal of cattle into the food chain;
  • R v Karim & others (2012) – Prosecution of 3 men in connection with the unlawful operation of an unauthorised kebab production facility;
  • R v Direct Halal Meat & Poultry Limited, Yusuf, Yusuf & Allibou (2010) – Prosecution of 3 men in connection with the unlawful operation of an unapproved meat cutting plant in which numerous food hygiene offences were discovered  (Appears in ‘Banks on Sentence’).
