Uzma appears regularly before the Magistrates Court and Crown Court on behalf of the prosecution, defence and probation service across the North East.

Uzma worked as a legal adviser in the Magistrates court for several years before working as a criminal barrister in the Teesside area. Having worked in a busy solicitors firm, she has invaluable practical experience of procedure from police station to Crown Court.

She is renowned for her client care, and takes a thorough approach in dealing with professional and lay clients.

Uzma has experience of prosecuting and defending a wide range of cases including assaults, public order, burglary, theft and fraud offences, sex offences, possession and production of drugs.

She has a keen interest in road traffic matters and has successfully prosecuted and defended appeals against conviction and sentence. She has a busy defence practice in dealing with successfully argued exceptional hardship and special reasons arguments.

Uzma also prosecutes for local authorities and has successfully prosecuted and defended matters of benefit fraud, environmental offences, health and safety offences and consumer protection offences.

She is also instructed to appeal benefit decisions, education admissions decisions and appears regularly before tribunals in the UK.

She has represented clients appealing licensing decisions, including taxi licences, alcohol licences and firearms licences.

Mental Health

Uzma has a busy mental health practice and appears regularly before mental health tribunals representing patients. She advises and represents people who have been made subject to the compulsory powers under the Mental Health Act 1983, whether it be detention in hospital or being made subject to a Community Treatment Order or Conditional Discharge.

She is very experienced at successfully representing detained patients in the First-Tier Tribunal and the Upper Tribunal.

Immigration

Uzma has a particular interest in immigration law and undertakes all aspects of immigration work having previously managed the immigration department at a solicitors firm. She is familiar with all aspects of immigration law and appears frequently before the Asylum and Immigration Tribunals throughout the country.
