COVID-19

Park Square Barristers remains open for business.

In line with Government guidance, our premises on Park Square, Leeds are closed with immediate effect. We remain nonetheless committed to providing the highest standards of advice and representation across all virtual and telephone platforms, online dispute resolution and virtual training in the fields of civil, criminal, family and regulatory and public law during this unprecedented time.

We recognise that for many of our Clients, this is a difficult time both professionally and personally. As the largest multi-disciplinary set on the North-Eastern Circuit, we will work with you to find progressive, tailor-made solutions, sharing with you our technical knowledge and experience.

“We are all having to make significant adjustments to our personal and professional lives as we face the challenge of the Covid-19 Pandemic together.

Whilst we have closed our building, our counsel and clerking team continue to work hard remotely and are available to offer a full range of legal advice across all of our practice areas.

At the same time we recognise that we are truly all in this together and will be working hard to provide relevant updates, training and events for all of our clients.

These are difficult times but we will emerge from them together. In the meantime look after yourselves and your families.” – Richard Wright QC, Head of Chambers

Our Clerking Team

All of our clerking and fees teams are working from home and have full access to their emails and direct dial telephone calls.

Even prior to Covid-19, we regularly received paperless briefs. Our clerks and barristers are completely up to date with the latest technology. Please do not hesitate to telephone our experienced clerking team should you wish to discuss how to send briefs electronically to chambers.

Technology

A lot has changed in a matter of weeks with how court hearings, conferences and mediations take place. Even prior to the pandemic, at Park Square Barristers we were regularly holding virtual conferences in our dedicated room for Skype video conferences.

Our members are familiar with all platforms for remote hearings, virtual conferences or online dispute resolution including Skype for Business, Zoom, Loop-up, Microsoft Teams, BT MeetMe and BT Conferencing, and are always willing to discuss and assist Solicitor Clients with those platforms, should the need arise.

We have strong team players and share knowledge and ideas within our teams to ensure both the highest level of service for clients and seamless continuity of representation. Skype for Business is now the preferred platform for courts country-wide. Over 30 members of chambers sit as Deputy District Judges, First-Tier Tribunal Judges, Recorders and Deputy High Court Judges across the North-Eastern Circuit –  we have first-hand experience of the requirements in each Court or hearing centre.

Darren Finlay, Head of the Civil Team, is part of the Technology Committee for the North-Eastern Circuit assisting barristers and other chambers to become acquainted with new technology during this time. To find the Skype for Business user guide drafted by Darren and the Technology Committee click here.

Members of chambers are involved in the pilot of the Cloud Video Platform (CVP), which is the platform now trialled for some remote hearings across courts on the North Eastern Circuit. The North Eastern Circuit Guides are available here: for connecting to court and connecting to prisons.

The HMCTs guide on how to joint telephone and video hearings (including via Cloud Video Platform (CVP)) can be found here.

Mediation & Online Dispute Resolution

Across all jurisdictions, there is likely to be an opportunity, now more than ever, to explore alternative avenues of dispute resolution. Many cases are being adjourned as a matter of course and parties are now finding that the end is no longer in sight. Perhaps worst of all, it is unknown how long the current situation will last.

We have an experienced team of alternative dispute resolution practitioners and a number of Deputy District Judges, First-Tier Tribunal Judges, Recorders (Civil and Family) and a Deputy High Court Judge able to apply their judicial experience in civil, commercial, family, healthcare and regulatory cases across the whole range of complexities and values.

Please contact our Mediation and Online Dispute Resolution Clerk, Andy Reeves for more information.
