Ian Hudson Successfully Secures Acquittal of Amateur Footballer
Park Square BarristersIan Hudson successfully secured the acquittal of an amateur footballer who was playing in an under 18s football league match. The prosecution alleged the defendant (a striker) had either punched the goalkeeper of the opposing team causing his jaw to fracture in two places, or by his actions intentionally encouraged others to attack the goalkeeper and was therefore guilty on a joint enterprise basis.
The defence was causation and self-defence.
Over the course of a five day trial the jury heard evidence from seven prosecution witnesses and three defences witness in addition to information provided by the match referee.
After retiring for just over 2 hours, the jury found the defendant not guilty of section 20 Grievous Bodily Harm and not guilty of S47 Actual Bodily Harm in the alternative.
