Julian Jones secures Conviction of Scarborough Man for Multiple Child Rape Offences

Matthew Scaife from Scarborough was convicted of multiple child rape offences and other serious sexual offences against a twelve-year old following a twelve day trial at York Crown Court in which Julian Jones appeared for the Crown, instructed by the CPS Yorkshire and Humberside RASSO Unit. He will fall to be sentenced in due course.

The case is one of a number in which Julian, who joined PSQB in February 2019, has secured convictions in respect of serious sexual offences on behalf of the CPS RASSO unit.

In February 2020, David Chapman was sentenced to imprisonment for two offences of indecent assault on a male at a Bradford care home in the 1970s. The defendant was convicted after a trial at Bradford Crown Court in autumn 2019 in which Julian successfully persuaded the Judge after full legal argument to admit evidence of admitted possession of indecent images 40 years later as relevant to an important matter in issue in the proceedings.

Also, in February 2020, Scott Powell was convicted after trial at Leeds Crown Court of one count of rape as well as other offences. The case was reported here.

In October 2019, Michael Laverick convicted after trial at Hull Crown Court of rape, attempted rape and other offences after attacking two young girls in similar circumstances in isolated locations in the Pocklington area. The case was reported here.

Also, in October 2019, Kevin Eddison was convicted of rape and other sexual and violent offences following a trial at Leeds Crown Court.

In September 2019, Ion Cojan pleaded guilty to sexual assault at Leeds Crown Court following an indication from a Judge that he was minded to accede to a hearsay application for sole and decisive evidence of three untraceable witnesses (the complainant and two others) to be put before a jury. The defendant had absconded in advance of his original trial date a decade earlier. Julian had drafted a comprehensive

25-page skeleton argument setting out the basis for the application in accordance with the leading authority of Riat.

In April 2019, John Smales was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court for a series of historic sexual offences, having pleaded guilty on the day of trial.

In March 2019, Bryan Hudson was sentenced at York Crown Court for a series of historic sexual offences. The case is reported here.

In addition to his work on behalf of the CPS RASSO unit, Julian also conducts the prosecution and defence of all areas of serious crime. He is instructed to defend as leading junior in a two-month multi handed fraud case in which the served evidence exceeds two million pages.
