Leeds man jailed for sons murder 21 years after attack – Richard Wright QC and Kate Batty prosecute

The defendant, Alan Bird, who suffocated his two-year-old son Lewis, leaving him with severe disabilities, has been jailed for his murder 21 years after the attack.

Bird was originally jailed in 2002 after admitting causing grievous bodily harm with intent but was later charged with murder after his son died in 2019.

Bird was jailed for life after being found guilty following a trial at Leeds Crown Court.

Richard Wright QC led Kate Batty for the prosecution.

During the trial Mr Wright QC told the Court Lewis only needed the tube as a direct result of Bird attacking him, and that therefore he was criminally responsible for his death.
