Men jailed over historic child sex abuse – Kate Batty prosecutes, Kate Bisset defends.

Kate Batty prosecuted and Kate Bisset defended in this case which involved the prosecution of 3 men who sexually abused 2 young girls when they were aged between 4 and 11 years old in the 1990s. The men were close friends with the girls’ parents and were frequently entrusted to babysit them.

Instead of looking after them, they subjected them to repeated and serious sexual abuse, culminating in multiple rapes of one of the girls when she was just 6 years old.  The case was complex because of the sheer number of occasions and different types of abuse and the delay between the abuse and the trial which meant that evidence was more difficult to gather.

Philip Ryan pleaded guilty on the first day of the trial and the remaining defendants, Paul Ineson and Peter Craven were convicted by a jury after a trial.  The defendants were sentenced by HHJ Clark yesterday at Leeds Crown Court. Ineson received a sentence of 24 years imprisonment (with 2 years extension because he is an offender of particular concern). Ryan was sentenced to 11 years and Craven to 9 years.

In his sentencing remarks the Judge said that it was one of the most shocking and upsetting cases he had seen in his career both as a judge and a barrister.

Kate Bisset represented Peter Craven.
