Park Square Barristers Involved in Landmark “Crash for Cash” Case

Sentencing was passed today on a case that was only the second in English Legal history to have the verdict decided by a Judge.

Mr. Justice Goss had dismissed the jury last week at the end of evidence in a three-week Manslaughter trial following allegations of jury intimidation and bribery.

The trial involved the death of 88-year-old Betty Laird in a “crash for cash” case.

Leeds Crown Court had heard evidence that a deliberate car accident had been staged; where the driver and three passengers drove onto Old Road in Leeds in a bid to stage a “crash for cash.” They then attempted the same again on another driver-by.

The case attracted local and national media attention and seven Barristers from PSQB were involved.

Peter Moulson QC lead Kate Bisset for the Crown.

For the defence Andy Hall QC led Jeremy Hill Baker, Andrew Dallas (led by Michael Mansfield QC)

Richard Wright QC leading Mike Jowett was the only defendant to be acquitted of Manslaughter, but was convicted of Conspiracy to Defraud
