Why does he do it?

By Stephen Brown

Sovereign Chambers has seen 20 members complete the Leeds half-marathon in the last two years, and the Head of Chambers, Andrew Lewis QC, completed the 125 mile Etape de Yorkshire cycle race just two weeks ago. However none of our barristers can compete with the endurance, mental strength and physical hardship which will be undertaken by Stephen Brown this weekend.

In what he describes himself as ‘an ongoing mid-life crisis’ Stephen Brown from the Sovereign Chambers Family Team will be attempting to run the West Highland Way race. The route goes from Glasgow to Fort William, a distance of 95 miles (NINETY-FIVE MILES) with 4, 500 metres of climbing along the way. He is likely to prove a tasty meal for thousands of midges. He is hoping to beat last year’s time of 26 hours 40 minutes but will be pleased just to finish. The race starts at the unsocial hour of 1am on Saturday – the fact that he is still likely to be running 24 hours later (most people finding it difficult to focus enough to stay awake for that long) is testament to the mental as well as physical stamina which is required.

Anyone wishing to follow his progress can do so by clicking on the link on the homepage of www.westhighlandwayrace.org and entering his name or race number, which is 131. The race starts at 1am on Saturday and the barristers at Sovereign Chambers will be texting round the clock messages of support and watching his progress in considerable awe!
