Driver who killed pedestrian in Leeds police chase jailed – Abdul Iqbal QC defends, Katherine Robinson prosecutes
Park Square BarristersA man who was already disqualified from driving who killed a pedestrian while being pursued by Police has been jailed for 6 years at Leeds Crown Court.
Adam Badkin admitted causing death by dangerous driving and death by dangerous driving while unlicensed and uninsured.
Prosecutor Katherine Robinson told the Court that the Police followed Badkin when they saw he was on his mobile phone at the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt and had a faulty brake light.
Badkin sped off through residential areas at speeds in excess of 80 mph before losing control of the vehicle, mounting the pavement and killing pedestrian Andrew Kitson.
Abdul Iqbal QC was defence counsel and in mitigation he said that his client had shown genuine regret over his actions.
Sentencing Badkin to 6 years imprisonment The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Guy Kearl QC, said “‘This offence is of the utmost gravity…I find that this was a deliberate course of prolonged bad driving. You were aware of the fact that there were other people about and you drove in what I judge to be a highly dangerous manner at grossly excessive speed”
