Kama Melly KC speaks at Communicourt Access to Justice Conference
Park Square BarristersCommunicourt is an organisation that wants people with communication differences or difficulties to have equal access to legal proceedings.
The conference, in partnership with human rights charity JUSTICE, featured talks from a range of experts from inside and outside the courtroom to discuss the future of inclusion and special measures in UK Courts.
Kama Melly KC’s presentation focused on person-centred approaches to special measures, which go beyond the provisions set out in the Youth Justice & Criminal Evidence Act (1999), including trauma-informed approaches to cross-examination.
As a leading silk, Kama has expertise in dealing with young defendants especially in cases concerning sexual offences and she has a particular interest in issues of Diversity and Inclusion.
Other speakers at the event included His Honour Judge Neil Clark, academics from the University of Bath and the University of Leeds.
There was also a pre-recorded video from broadcaster Chris Packham who described his experiences in the courtroom as an autistic person.
