Katherine Robinson assists in developing Somaliland’s Justice System

Katherine Robinson is currently residing in Ethiopia, working in Somaliland and Djibouti, as a Criminal Justice Advisor for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The current justice system in Somaliland consists of legalisation derived from Islamic Sharia Law, Customary Law and Formal Law. Katherine is working to build the capacity of the Justice system, through engagement with the judiciary, investigative forces and prosecutors.

Recently Somaliland, funded by the UK, has redeveloped the main court complex for the Hargeisa region in line with the joint aim of improving access to the legal system for all. The new complex consists of a plethora of new facilities, including an Information Centre providing the public with helpful insights into the legal system, encouraging transparency and access to justice.

Speaking on behalf of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office; Katherine Robinson has congratulated the efforts of the Minister of Justice, Chief Justice and senior Judiciary and assured them that the British Government will continue to show support for Somaliland’s justice sector.

We wish Katherine continued success in her overseas work as a Criminal Justice Advisor
